SHREVEPORT, La. -- The Southwestern University Pirates softball team lost its Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) semifinal game against top-seeded Texas Lutheran University by a score of 10-2 in extra innings.
Texas Lutheran got to starting pitcher Bailey Meyer early though, scoring four in the bottom of the first. Kelly Jurden led the inning off with a walk and Casey Martin singled on a bunt. Cassie Roche moved both over on a sacrifice bunt, setting up Madisyn Cates' two-RBI single through the right side.
Kassie Maddox hit an infield single and Chassety Raines drew a walk, loading the bases for Skylar Ouellette's RBI-single to right field with Cates being thrown out at home.
Lexi Shafer entered the game in relief of Meyer in the pitcher's circle, getting out of the inning but not before Raines stole home for a 4-1 lead.
Montemayor cut into the lead with a sacrifice fly to center field in the top of the second, scoring Celeste Silvas, who reached on a throwing error during a sacrifice bunt attempt.
Texas Lutheran put runners on the corners to start the bottom of the second with Kali Chatham singling up the middle and Jurden advancing her to third on a single to the pitcher. Jurden stole second to put both runners in scoring position and Martin scored a RBI, reaching on a fielder's choice to score Chatham.
After a walk, Cates hit a RBI-single up the middle to score Jurden and load the bases and Maddox walked to score Martin, ending Shafer's day with Nadia Netek taking over.
Raines followed with a RBI-single through the right side, scoring Roche, and Ouellette scored Cates, reaching on a fielder's choice for a 9-2 lead.
Both teams went scoreless in the third and fourth innings until TLU ended the game in the bottom of the fifth on a walk-off single down the left-field line by Cates, scoring Martin, who reached on a walk to trigger the mercy rule.
The Pirates will drop down in the bracket to play the winner of the Dallas and Centenary game at 8:00 p.m. with an opportunity to face TLU again tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. if they win.
