Pirates rebound with pair of wins Sunday

KERRVILLE, Texas – After dropping their first two conference games, Southwestern softball responded with an 8-4 win in nine innings in game one and 6-3 win in game two.

SU wasted no time getting on the scoreboard with an RBI single by Kayla Irvin and sacrifice fly from Caroline Young. Irvin added another run for the Pirates in the third off a double that brought home Stacy Rosengren.

Schreiner was slow to start but joined the scoring in the fourth with an RBI single from Scudder to cut into the Pirates' lead. Michele Ramos matched the one run by drawing a walk with the bases loaded, bringing home Arenne Gonzales.

Schreiner tied the game in the bottom of the fifth on a triple from Scudder that cleared the bases and tied the game 4-4.

After a scoreless sixth and seventh the game entered extra innings and it wasn't until the ninth that Southwestern took control with a four run ninth. Irvin, Young, Berkeley Bacon and Ramos all drove home runs in the inning and the Pirate defense took care of the rest to close out the win.

Rosengren, Irvin and Christina Crandall all posted three hits in game one while Irvin led with three RBIs. Scudder was Schreiner's best offense with three hits and four RBIs. Nicole Gibbs earned the complete game win, allowing four runs, three earned on 11 hits while walking one and striking out two.

Southwestern's hot bats continued in game two as they posted three runs to open the game. Schreiner responded with one run in the bottom half of the inning, but SU never lost the lead. Each team scored one in the third and the Mountaineers added another in the sixth, but the Pirates put the icing on the cake with two runs in the seventh before setting Schreiner down in order to close the game.

Crandall led at the plate, going 3-4 with two RBIs. Cozette Palmer earned her first win of the season with 4.2 innings, allowing one earned run on three hits while walking none and striking out nine.

Southwestern improves to 5-10-1 on the year and 2-2 in the SCAC. They remain in conference action as they return home to face Texas Lutheran University on Friday at 1 and 3 p.m.
