Southwestern shot below 30% from the field and just 45% from the free throw line to drop their season opener 66-44 to the University of Texas Dallas on Tuesday.
The Comets took an early lead and the Pirates played catch-up the remainder of the first half, trailing 32-23 at the break.
In the second half, UTD went up by as many as 14 with 10:43 remaining in the game, but Southwestern quickly pulled within nine after a layup from Olivia Podaras and three pointer from McKamie Place. UTD's Emily Price responded with a three of her own, however, to put UT Dallas up 47-35 with 9:58 remaining.
SU's scoring drought continued through the remainder of the game as the Pirates posted just two field goals in the final 10 minutes.
Jordan Owens led offensively with 14 points on 4-14 shooting while Annie Bourne posted 20 rebounds and a team high four assists. Bourne moves within five rebounds of matching the career mark for rebounds at Southwestern. Marjorie Gibson is the current record holder with 847 career rebounds from 1991-1995.
As a team, Southwestern shot 29% from the floor, 45% from the free throw line and 19% from three point range and were out-rebounded 46-42 in the loss.
Southwestern opens the season at 0-1 on the year while UTD improves to 2-0. The Pirates hit the road to face Denison on Friday in game one of two in St. Louis, MO. Game time is set for 5pm.
