Three members of the Southwestern University Pirates baseball team were named to the D3baseball.com All-West Region Team on Thursday.
Daniel Montgomery Jr., Austin Smith, and Byron Dowdell II were among the 41 baseball players on the three All-West region teams after helping Southwestern University to a 24-19 season, accumulating its most wins since 2005.
Montgomery was named as the First Team All-West third baseman after leading the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) in runs (48) and triples (four) while tying for the conference lead in home runs (nine). He also finished second in the SCAC in total bases (110), doubles (15), slugging percentage (.667) and on base percentage (.485), and was third in hits (60) and RBI (45) with a .354 batting average.
Smith, the 2019 SCAC Pitcher of the Year, was named to the All-West Region Third Team after compiling a 7-2 record. In his sophomore season, Smith finished No. 13 in DIII in strikeouts per nine innings with 12.48 and sixth in total strikeouts with 110, leading the SCAC in both categories.
Dowdell was named Third Team All-West Region designated hitter, finishing the regular season tied with Montgomery for the SCAC lead with nine home runs and leading the conference in RBI (47) while batting .320 with a .547 slugging percentage, scoring 35 runs.
