Southwestern Splits on Saturday

GEORGETOWN, Texas – Southwestern split with Texas Lutheran on Saturday winning game one 5-3 and dropping the second 7-1.

In the first game of the afternoon, Texas Lutheran jumped out to a 1-0 lead on three hits in the top of the first inning.

Southwestern got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third.  Dickson Wharton reached on an error, Jason McCormack was hit by a pitch, and Will Cates drew a walk to load the bases.  Ben Little stepped up to the plate and smacked a two RBI single through the right side of the infield.  Following a balk, Cates scored on a sacrifice fly by Clayton Sparks.  Then Robert Wehman drove in Little to put the Pirates up 4-1.

The Bulldogs closed the gap in their half of the fourth inning.  They started their two out rally with a pair of walks and both runners scored on a double down the left field line by Austin Frick to make it a 4-3 ball game.

The Pirates added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth.  Wehman reached on an infield single to the shortstop and later scored on a single to left field by Chase Allen for the 5-3 final score.

SU's Clayton Haag picked up his first win of the season in relief of starter Jacob Kendra with Riley Wayland earning the save.

In game two, Texas Lutheran got off to another hot start by taking the 3-0 lead in the first inning.

Southwestern's lone run of the game came in their half of the third.  McCormack hit a two out single through the right side and scored on a double to center field by Cates to cut it to a 3-1 game.

That was as close as the Pirates would get as the Bulldogs added runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to seal the rubber match 7-1.

Texas Lutheran's Thomas Harwell was impressive as he pitched a complete game and struck out fifteen en route to his second win of the year.

At the end of the day, Southwestern moves to (5-6) and Texas Lutheran to (11-6) on the year.  The Pirates compete again at Mary Hardin-Baylor on Tuesday, March 10th at 6pm.
