#13 PIRATES SWEEP THROUGH FINAL WEEK OF CONFERENCE COMPETITION; FINISH UNDEFEATED

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Excellence. Domination. Perfection. All words that could be used to describe the Southwestern volleyball team as they have made their way through SCAC conference action over the past month. The Pirates solidified their regular season conference title with wins over Centre, Oglethorpe, DePauw and Austin over the weekend, extending their win streak to 21 which dates back to September 9th.

Southwestern first faced Centre College on Friday and wasted no time exerting their dominance over the Colonels, winning game one 25-12 with a .407 kill percentage. They followed that performance with an even better hitting percentage (.433) to take game two 25-14. Game three the Pirates used two blocks by first-year Rachel Thibodeau on the final two points of the match to win the game 26-24 and match 3-0.

SU picked up where they left off for their afternoon match against Oglethorpe with the Pirates not allowing more than 13 points in one game and touting a .300 team kill percentage for the match including a .478 percentage in game one. Southwestern defeated Oglethorpe 3-0, 25-11, 25-13, 25-9 with nine Pirates recording kills during the contest.

Saturday, the Pirates first faced fourth place DePauw and jumped out to an early lead once again, winning the first game 25-12 with a .444 team hitting percentage. The Tigers pushed closer in games two and three, but the momentum mounted by SU could not be overcome as the Pirates snatched both games, 25-21 and 25-20, to take the 3-0 win. Senior Audra Gentry had a massive 18 kills during the contest to lead Southwestern while Sam Lingamfelter’s 22 digs kept the Tigers at bay.

The Pirates had their toughest contest in their final match of the weekend as they faced off with Austin College. An uncharacteristicly slow start by SU gave Austin College a brief 1-0 lead (23-25), but Southwestern returned true to form and easily handled the ‘Roos the rest of the way taking game two 25-12, three 25-17 and four 25-20. Gentry once again led in kills with 20, but Thibodeau provided the extra boost the Pirates needed, coming off the bench for 15 kills. Lingamfelter once again did her job in the back row, recording an impressive 41 digs.

Southwestern sits all alone in first place in the conference with a 23-3 overall record and 14-0 in the SCAC. They will continue to refine their skills and look to extend their win streak as they head to Austin College this coming weekend to take on three American Southwest Conference schools and a newly revived Arlington Baptist squad.
