PIRATE MEN AND WOMEN TAKE 9TH AT SCAC TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS
CONWAY, Ark. – In the final day of action at the SCAC Championships the Pirate men and women continued to post record setting performances, closing out the season in impressive fashion.
Avery Sheppard had a great run in the 400 meter dash finals, taking second place. His time of 49.87 was just 14 one-hundredths of a second behind first place finisher, Steele of DePauw. Alex Sheppard and Brian Schaefer also competed in the event with Alex running in a season best time of 52.00 for 12th place while Schaefer came in 21st at 59.87.
The men's 4x4 relay of Matthew Broussard, Alex Sheppard, Sebastian Winkler and Sheppard, came in 5th place in a time of 3:30.18 while first-year Sam Martinez snatched up 6th place with a time of 15:49.78 in the men's 5K. Josh Gideon and Allen Smith also ran the men's 5K. Gideon placed 15th in a time of 16:32.21 and Smith came in 22nd at 17:01.20.
Other finishes for SU were Allen Smith's 12th place finish (4:13.23) and Sebastian Winkler's 18th place finish (4:20.12) in the 1500, Matthew Broussard's 16th place finish (2:04.04) and Addison English's 23rd place finish (2:08.97) in the 800 meter run, and Wladyka and Schaefer's 17th and 18th place finishes in the javelin. Mladyka threw 29.85 meters whild Schaefer had a personal best throw of 26.56.
The women broke some SU records as well during the tournament as well as posting some personal and season best times. Taylin Eckols, with a 6th place finish in the javelin, had an SU record breaking throw of 30.44 meters. The women's 4x4 relay, consisting of Kelly Myers, Tami Warner, Dianna Urrego and Christina Hadly, also set a new Southwestern record, taking 6th with a time of 4:17.51. Jodi Wilson also competed in the javelin, throwing a personal best 26.05 meters for 11th place.
Tami Warner came in 6th place in the women's 800 in a season best time of 2:21.11 while Laura Kromann finished in 17th in 2:35.24. Also finishing in the top 10 were Myers and Nekia Tharps in the 100 meter hurdles Myers took 8th place in 16.79 while Tharps was 10th in a time of 16.95.
Hadly posted a personal best time by 19 seconds in the 1500. Her time of 5:14.35 earned her 10th place by winning the second section of the race. Laura Wooden and Jillian Curran also competed in the event with Wooden taking 18th and Curran in 19th. Woodeon finished in 5:39.70 while Curran came in at 5:44.06.
Three Pirates competed in the 100 meter dash, Tharps, Busola Okunnu, and Ana Rivera. Tharps took 15th (13.59), Okunnu 19th (14.14) and Rivera 21st (16.66). Okummu and Tharps partnered with Tindle and Myers for the 4x100 relay and finished in seventh in a time of 53.75.
Other finishes for the Pirates were Eckols' 15th place finish in the shot put at 8.94 meters, Tindle taking 12th place in the triple jump (9.24 meters), and Tharps ending in 14th place in the long jump (4.62 meters).
The Championships mark the end of a very successful 2010 season for the Pirates.
