SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Southwestern women's tennis team traveled to San Antonio this past weekend to compete in their first tournament of the year, the ITA Southwest Regional Championships.
Southwestern fared well in singles with junior Kristina Krampitz and first-year Marieke Visser both making it to the fourth round. Visser had a very close fourth round match. After winning the first set 6-3 and losing the second set 4-6, Visser ultimately lost the tie breaker 5-10.
Junior Aimee Blake, first-year Lillian Calhoun, and senior Sarah Johnson all won their first round matches as well while sophomore Virginia Stofer, first-year Elizabeth Ellis, first-year Gabby Hunt, senior Abigail Sedory, and first-year Chelsea Sommerfeldt all lost in the first round.
Southwestern displayed a strong showing in the first round of doubles play with A Draw doubles teams Stofer/Hunt and Blake/Ellis, and B Draw doubles teams Krampitz/Sommerfeldt and Johnson/Calhoun winning their first round matches. Stofer/ Hunt went on to defeat the #7 seed from Hardin Simmons but lost to the #1 seed and eventual tournament winners from Trinity 1-8 in the third round. Krampitz/ Sommerfeldt were also defeated in the third round while Blake/Ellis were defeated by Trinity and Johnson/Calhoun by Schreiner in the second round. Sedory/ Visser were defeated by Schreiner in the first round of play.
The Pirates close out the fall season on October 5th in Brownwood, Texas, taking on Howary Payne University.
