PIRATES IMPRESSIVE ON FIRST DAY OF OPENING WEEKEND
CONWAY, Ark. – The Southwestern women’s swim team
got off to an incredible start to their season at the 42nd Annual
Hendrix Classic, winning one event and posting 12 top ten
finishes.
Junior Bailey Thompson took first place and earned 20 points for
the Pirates in the 200 yard backstroke. Her time of 2:12.77 was
almost two seconds faster than the second place finisher, leaving
the rest of her competition in her wake. Thompson also swam the 200
yard free, taking sixth place in that event with a time of 2:03.82
and teamed up with senior Stephanie Morton, first-year Melissa
Nelson and sophomore Sarah Ayers in the 400 yard medley relay that
took fifth place in a time of 4:21.47.
SU’s 400 free relay of junior Michelle Comerota, first-year
Elizabeth Lewis, sophomore Christine Moody and Nelson matched the
fifth place finish of the medley relay with a time of 4:00.73.
Comerota took fifth place after shaving nearly a second off of her
seed time in the 100 free to finish with a 59.03. Moody finished in
13th in the same event with a time of 1:01.06 and took seventh
place with a time of 26.90 in the 50 free. Teammate Morton finished
in 16th place in the 50 free in a time of 29.53.
Lewis looked tough in her first collegiate meet, placing fifth in
the 500 yard free. Her time of 5:32.33 was a whopping 12 seconds
better than her seed time. Fellow first-year Katie Coleman shaved
off 17 seconds on her 500 time to come in at 6:28.90 and in 11th
place.
Nelson seized seventh as well in the 200 butterfly with a 2:22.72
while senior Anya Lopez-Fuentes came in 12th at 3:09.21.
Ayers had a solid individual finish of her own coming in eighth
place in the 200 individual medley, finishing in 2:21.85, almost
four seconds better than her seed time and came in 10th in the 200
yard back in a time of 2:22.61.
Other finishes for the Pirates were Comerota’s 15th place
finish in the 200 yard freestyle (2:13.51) and Morton’s 10th
place finish in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:46.91.
Southwestern will continue their meet at the Hendrix relays on
Saturday.
