PIRATES SET TO PROVE INAUGURAL SEASON WAS LEGITIMATE IN 2010
GEOREGETOWN, Texas – As the Southwestern softball team
enters their second season of existence they have a lot to live up
to from their first year and are working hard to prove that the
success they enjoyed last season wasn’t a fluke.
Head Coach Angela Froboese has a young but seasoned group in her
dugout for the 2010 season as she returns 10 players from last
year’s West Division Champions. “Having returners is a
huge asset for us this season and we have had some young leaders
emerge that are helping to push players and bring a cohesive unit
to the field,” states Coach Froboese.
Included in those ten are pitchers Lyndsy Maus and Kaitlyn Pavlicek
who went 18-15 holding opponents to a .264 batting average as a
pair and will provide a solid foundation from which to build from
this season.
In the field is an experienced core, anchored by 2009 SCAC
Honorable Mention senior Katelyn Gola, that now has depth at each
position with the addition of seven, very talented, first-year
players. “The depth at positions this season is giving us
great competition which is pushing players to get better but will
also provide us with flexibility as we begin non-conference action
and figure out what our strongest line-up will be,” says
Coach Froboese.
The Pirates seem poised to be tough at the plate as they return
their top three hitters from last season. “We have the talent
to be strong all the way through the batting lineup which is
imperative if we are going to be successful again this
season,” explains Coach Froboese. “Our mix of power and
speed can make us dangerous to opponents.”
Southwestern opens the season on February 13th with a double-header
against Concordia University at Old Settlers Park and then head to
Texas Lutheran on Sunday before coming home for the first time in
2010 for games on the 19th against Hardin-Simmons and 20th vs. the
University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.
