Back-to-Back Shutouts for Women's Soccer
Oct. 5, 2008
Southwestern women's soccer stretched their winning streak to four on Sunday, scoring a 2-0 win against conference opponents Austin College.
With a strong wind at their backs in the first half, the Pirates pummeled their opponents in shots 12-1 -- including attempts made off a record eleven corner kicks -- but a goal wouldn't come until the 41st minute when a long pass by sophomore Lauren Kjolhede would find junior forward Andi Miller, who sent a grounder into the right net.
The Kangaroos fought their way back into the game in the second half, putting the Bucs on the defensive as they played into ten to fifteen mile an hour winds. "I was impressed with our composure during the second half, and how we dealt with the windy conditions," commented assistant coach Amanda Garrison. Sophomore defenders Berkeley Mengwasser and Madi Stachura held off several Austin drives, while goalkeeper Eryn Snyder knocked away six shots to maintain Southwestern's lead. With eight minutes left on the clock, junior A.J. Andreola drove the Pirates into the comfort zone with a second goal, bringing home the win at 2-0.
The victory bumps up the Pirates' record to 7-2-1 (2-1 SCAC) while knocking Austin College down to 5-6 (0-3 SCAC). The women will continue play at home next weekend against two more conference schools, hosting Sewanee on Friday and Oglethorpe on Sunday. Southwestern has come out ahead in the past two encounters with both schools, coming away with a 1-0 win and a 1-1 double-overtime tie against Sewanee in 2007 and 2006, and 5-0 and 3-0 wins against Oglethorpe in the same years.
