Crusaders No Match for Pirates in 5-0 Shutout Win
Oct. 3, 2008
Fifty five seconds was all it took for sophomore Danielle Madison to open up a first half scoring streak that led the Southwestern Pirates into halftime with a 4-0 lead against the University of Dallas Crusaders on Friday.
Both teams had barely taken the field when an early foul on Dallas set up an indirect kick for sophomore midfielder Lauren Kjolhede, who found Madison near the net for a goal in the first minute of play. Before the halftime whistle blew, three more goals would follow by Pirates Kjolhede, Jillian Curran and Casey Grier, thanks in part to assists by Madison, Maria Pollifrone, A.J. Andreola and Madi Stachura. A slower second period followed, with Andreola finding the goal one final time through a tight crowd in the 71st minute off a short pass by Carol Wiesner.
"It was a real team effort," said head coach Jené Baclawski. "When you see five goals scored by five different players - and six different assists - it's easy to see how we overwhelmed [the Crusaders]." Contributions from the Pirates as a team, rather than individual players, have characterized their play this season, with a combined season contribution of 24 goals and 17 assists coming from twelve different players.
The shutout, the third this season for goalkeeper Eryn Snyder, improved Southwestern's record up to 6-2-1 (1-1 SCAC). The Bucs will remain at home for another weekend game on Sunday (October 5) against Austin College.
