Two More Wins for Women's Soccer

Sept. 29, 2008

Splitting their time between Georgetown and Seguin last weekend, the Pirates continued their winning ways with two wins against Schreiner and Texas Lutheran.

On Friday at home, Southwestern pummeled Schreiner in a 7-0 victory featuring contributions from several players. Senior captain Casey Grier would open up the scoring in the 11th minute of play with her first of two goals, sending the ball into the left net off a cross by Danielle Madison. Madison would follow up with two goals of her own, as did Jillian Curran, Lauren Kjolhede and A.J. Andreola. Three more assists would be credited to Kjolhede, Andreola and Annabelle Ross. The loss dropped the Mountaineers' record to 0-7.

Non-conference play would continue for the Bucs on Sunday in Seguin against Texas Lutheran. After a first half goal by TLU striker Sunny Valencia off a loose ball, shot after shot rained down upon the Bulldogs' goal before Jillian Curran finally found the back of the net in the 72nd minute. Danielle Madison would again prove to be a key part of the Pirates' success as she scored the game winner eight minutes later thanks to a Casey Grier - Jennifer Huntsman assist.

While a more competitive game than Friday's, there was no doubt in head coach Jené Baclawski's mind that the Pirates would come off victorious. "[They] showed a lot of determination. I knew we were eventually going to be able to break though," Baclawski remarked. Texas Lutheran's record fell to 3-5 while the non-conference wins moved Southwestern up to 5-2-1 (1-1 SCAC).

The team will continue their season at home this weekend (October 3-5) against University of Dallas on Friday and Austin College on Sunday.
