One and one on the road for women's soccer against Hendrix and #15 Rhodes

Sept. 21, 2008

Southwestern women's soccer spent its fourth straight week on the road last weekend, opening conference play against fellow SCAC schools Hendrix and Rhodes.

Sophomore Amy Douglas struck early against the Warriors on Friday in Conway, scoring in the fifth minute of play against Hendrix. Junior A.J. Andreola followed suit ten minutes later with a goal of her own and a second goal by Douglas at 22:45 put the Pirates into the comfort zone going into the second period. A late goal off a free kick by Hendrix's Amelia Wildenborg in the 88th minute was all the hosts could muster before the final whistle blew. Southwestern dominated in both shots (17-7) and corner kicks (10-1).

On Sunday, the Pirates traveled to Memphis to take on #15 Rhodes, who was on a two-game winning streak after defeating ninth ranked Emory and twenty-second ranked Trinity. A goal by Rhodes' Molly Buss in the sixth minute proved to be the game winner as both teams held each other scoreless for the remaining time.

Despite the loss, Southwestern made it clear that they were a team to be taken seriously. "We were very dangerous," said head coach Jene Baclawski of the team's performance. "To play a nationally ranked opponent and be dominant on their home field is a step forward for the team."

The Pirates will play their first home match of the season this weekend on Friday, September 26 against Schreiner, followed by an away game on Sunday, September 28 at Texas Lutheran in Seguin.
