Pirates Hammer Mary Hardin-Baylor 3-1
Sept. 12, 2008
Playing a day early to avoid the expected inclement weather from Hurricane Ike, Southwestern women's soccer traveled to Belton to take on the Mary Hardin-Baylor Crusaders (0-2) last Saturday, coming away victorious with a 3-1 win.
The Pirates struck early, as sophomore forward Amy Douglas scored seven minutes into the game off an assist by newcomer Maria Pollifrone. Danielle Madison added another goal fifteen minutes later, followed by a Mary Hardin-Baylor score just before the halfway point by midfielder Natalie Ervin. Southwestern put in one more off a corner kick in the second half thanks to junior Andi Miller, who currently leads the team in goals scored with three.
"It was important for us to get back into the win column after our loss against UT-Tyler last weekend," said coach Jené Baclawski. Strong contributions by the Pirates came from all sides of the field in the win, which moves Southwestern's record up to 2-1-1. "I'm really impressed with how deep the talent is on this team."
Initial reports that the team would rock their opponents like a hurricane were later confirmed.
The Bucs will open conference play against Hendrix and Rhodes next weekend on the road before returning to Georgetown for their season opener on September 28 against Schreiner.
