GEORGETOWN, Texas – A high-powered Pirate attack earned the Pirates their first home win of the season, a 1-0 victory over Howard Payne University Tuesday night.
There was a lot of action early as both teams worked hard for attacks on the opposing team, getting great looks at goal throughout the half and testing the keepers from the opening whistle. Despite all the action the first half came to a close without a score 0-0. Each team took 10 shots in the half, but HPU worked for seven corner kicks while allowing Southwestern none.
With renewed vigor the Pirates hit the pitch and got just the break they needed as Lyndsey Resnik sent a ball into the box that was misplayed by Adrienne Walker in goal. After Walker's touch, the ball landed at the feet of Ashley Moulder who put the ball in the back of the net with one touch to give Southwestern a 1-0 lead just two minutes into the frame.
Southwestern was just inches from making it a 2-0 lead as Kirsten Mazur drilled a shot from 25 yards out that Walker got just enough of a touch on to poke over the crossbar.
Even with the Yellow Jackets deep in Pirate territory Southwestern held strong and handled each attack in stride, never losing control of the game and closed out the contest for the 1-0 victory.
The Pirates ended the match with a slight advantage in shots, 13-12, while HPU had seven more corner kicks 9-2. Each keeper was busy in goal as Walker recorded six saves and Sarah Nonaka seven saves.
The win improves SU to 2-8 on the season. They return to SCAC conference action on Friday night as they face Austin College in Sherman at 2 p.m.
