May 12, 2008

On Tuesday (May 13), the Southwestern University women's golf team will begin play at its third consecutive NCAA Division III National Championship being held in Waverly, IA.

The Pirates are fresh off their second-straight Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference championship and join fellow SCAC member DePauw University in Iowa. Last year at the National Championship tournament SU placed fourth overall.

At the conference tournament, junior Marisa Mauldin (Utopia, TX/Utopia HS) repeated as SCAC Golfer of the Year by winning the tournament by four strokes. Junior Delilah Dominguez (Bastrop, TX/Bastrop HS) took sixth and sophomore Kristen Davenport (Mansfield, TX/Mansfield HS) tied for eighth as both earned Second Team All-SCAC honors. Cody Wallace (Austin, TX/Lake Travis HS), a sophomore, missed out on All-Conference laurels by finishing 11th. First-year Victoria Dominguez (Bastrop, TX/Bastrop HS) placed 16th.

In the tournament field this year, 12 of the 20 teams return from the 2007 field. Defending champion Methodist University looks for its ninth consecutive championship. Other schools from the 2007 tournament include Gustavus Adolphus College, University of St. Thomas, Southwestern, Williams College, Illinois Wesleyan University, DePauw, Allegheny College, Olivet College, University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire, Middlebury College and Illinois College.

The Pirates begin play on Tuesday at 12:50 pm and they will be paired with golfers from Williams College and University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point. Fans can follow along with the tournament via live scoring from Golfstat.
