Men's and Women's Golf Set for Success
GEORGETOWN, Texas – The men's and women's golf teams are preparing to finish the second half of their seasons on a strong, defining note. With the help of several key players, along with a competitive schedule, the Pirates plan to make waves on the national scale by the end of the season.
"Our ultimate goal, for both the men's and women's team, is to win conference and go to the national tournament," says Dan Ruyle, Southwestern's head golf coach. Although the Pirates experienced much success during the fall portion of their split season, they have a tough road ahead of them in order to earn a trip to the NCAA tournament.
Both teams will rely heavily on the play of their juniors in order to stay competitive this spring. The men's golf team will be led by juniors Mikey Vaughan and James Charles. Vaughan posted a 74.45 scoring average in the fall portion of the season while Charles shot a 75.45. The men's team will also depend on the breakout play from first-year Jordan Cowart who had a 76.09 scoring average in the fall. The women's team will look towards the on and off the green leadership from juniors Karissa Speck and Kelsey Coburn. Speck posted an 80.00 scoring average this past fall and Coburn followed closely with an 81.00. The women's effort will be rounded out by the consistent play from first-year Lauren Boone who had an 83.25 in the fall portion of the season.
However, in order to thrive as a whole, both the men's and women's golf teams will be looking for another member to step up and fill the last score reporting slot. All schools compete with five players and the top four lowest scores are used to determine place finishes in tournaments. "Both teams will depend on the four and five positions to be successful," Ruyle stated.
According to Coach Ruyle, two specific tournaments will act as a marker to gauge if they are on track to meet their goals. The men's team will be attending the Texas Lutheran University Invitational on March 12th and 13th and will be a true test of their skill and hard work. The women's team will travel to Georgia to compete in the Jekyll Island Invitational March 16th-18th and many of the top teams in Division III will also be in attendance.
But before those contests, the men'sand women's golf teams will open their spring season with the Mary-Hardin Baylor Invitational in Temple, Texas on February 27th and 28th. The Southwestern Pirates multimedia outlets will be providing as up to date scores as possible. Coach Ruyle will also be updating Pirate Golf fans via Twitter (@SUPiratesGolf).
