RECORD BREAKING WEEKEND AS PIRATES PREPARE FOR SCAC CHAMPIONSHIPS
SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Three Southwestern records fell by the wayside on Friday afternoon as the Pirates competed at the Tiger Twilight in their last meet before the SCAC Championships. Two personal best and three season best performances were also on display during the Twilight.
Matthew Wladyka had a monster evening as he broke two SU records himself. He threw 37.09 meters in the javelin and 10.07 meters in the shot put to place his name in the record books again. Allen Smith joined in the record breaking performances, busting the previous record by four seconds, running in 4:06.5.
The great runs in the 1500 didn't stop there as the three other Pirates competing in the event had best runs. Sam Martinez posted a personal best time of 4:11 and Josh Gideon also had a personal best run of 4:12. Sebastian Winkler put up a season best time in the event.
Brady Kent and Brian Schaefer had season best runs in the 400 meter dash, Kent coming in 17th at 57.64 and Schaefer at 59.61. Matthew Broussard's time of 2:03.21 in the 800 meter run earned him a third place finish and was also a season best time.
Zach Freeland had the highest finish of the day, coming in second place in the 5000 meter run at 16:30.59.
The 4x400 meter relay came in fourth place overall in a time of 3:46.61.
The Pirates will look to continue to improve on their already impressive times at the SCAC Championships this coming weekend. Competition begins on Friday, April 23rd.
