GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Southwestern Men's Soccer team will face the semi-pro Austin Aztex at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, April 19th on the Maple Street fields for their only play date of the spring season. Several youth soccer organizations will be invited to catch the action as the Aztex promote their upcoming summer season.
In September 2011, the Austin Aztex announced the launching of a new franchise in the United Soccer League (USL) beginning with the 2012 season. The previous Aztex team was founded in 2008 and moved to Orlando, Florida in 2010 as part of the USL's top professional league. Last year, the Aztex finished 2nd in their conference to advance to the USL playoffs where they placed 7th out of 72 teams nationwide. They led the nation in scoring and fewest goals allowed in the regular season.
Southwestern Assistant Coach, Zack Pope, returns to captain the Aztex squad for a second consecutive season.
The SU Men's Soccer team closed out the 2012 season with a 13-8-2 overall record and went 5-4-1 in the SCAC. They went on to defeat Centenary College and Colorado College (PKs) to advance to their first Finals appearance in the SCAC Tournament. In 2012, six players, the most ever at SU, were named to the All SCAC Teams. Four will be returning for 2013: Matt Nickell and Steven Resnik (1st Team SCAC); Timothy Eamma and Zach Faulkner (2nd Team). The Pirates look to set a new tone for the 2013 season as they head in to one of their most challenging schedules to date.
Recently, the SU Men's Soccer Alumni were on campus for the annual Alumni Match versus the current team. Alumni were treated to food, fellowship, and soccer at the best attended event since its inception over 10 years ago.
