ZACHARY POPE NAMED ASSISTANT MEN’S SOCCER COACH

Southwestern University's Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. Glada Munt announced Tuesday, July 20, 2010 the hiring of Zachary Pope as the Assistant Men’s Soccer Coach.

“SU players will be excited to play under someone with such great success and experience in the game,” says Head Coach Don Gregory. “He finally landed at Southwestern after we recruited him out of high school and had previously tried to get him as a coach. He is a great guy, humble, and hard-working. Southwestern is lucky to have him.”

Pope is no stranger to the Austin area, he attended Round Rock Stony Point High School where he was a McDonald’s All-American and Nike All-Star. After high school, Pope continued on to play at Duke University where he was a Freshman All-American and NCAA Final Four participant. Following his graduation in 2007, Pope was drafted to play Major League Soccer in 2008 by the Chicago Fire. He also appeared with FC Dallas. In 2009, he returned to the Austin area playing with the Austin Aztex Futbol Club.

Pope has been coaching with the Lonestar Soccer Club since 2008 where he works with girls and boys teams ranging from ages 8-18. He has also been working with Cen-Tex Soccer Training where he helps to enhance player performance.

The Men’s Soccer Team begins their season September 1st at Texas Lutheran. The first Pirate Soccer home game will be September 11th versus Texas-Dallas with kick-off at 3pm.
