PIRATES END SEASON WITH 3-2 WIN OVER RHODES
GEORGETOWN, Texas – With a dense fog rolling across the
field the Pirates said goodbye to four seniors who have had the
most successful careers at Southwestern. Josh Spencer, David
Lozano, Nathan Shaw-Meadow and Checo Carreon ended their careers in
style with a 3-2 win against Rhodes College.
Three early offside calls saved Rhodes from falling behind early in the half. The Lynx were the first on the board in the ninth minute when a ball was headed around in the Southwestern box and Michael Pappas was in the right place at the right time and got just enough of his head on the ball to change the trajectory and sneak it past sophomore keeper Nick Pierce to put Rhodes up 1-0.
SU was able to pull even in the 15th minute on a perfectly placed corner kick by Fernando Leon. Leon’s ball floated into the middle of the box and to Spencer who then headed it into the back of the net.
The tie wouldn’t last long, however, as Southwestern kept the momentum and scored again only 81 seconds later. Shaw-Meadow received the drop pass from Alex Keller and lifted the ball from 30 yards out just over the keeper’s head and into the back of the net to give SU the 2-1 lead.
The remainder of the half was a physical contest but a scoreless one as the Pirates headed into the second period up one.
The Pirates nearly scored early in the second period when Alex Keller had a breakaway header, but Rhodes’ Fernberger made a great diving save.
Shaw-Meadow got his second goal of the game when Leon found Spencer who flicked it to Shaw-Meadow in the center of the box and put it past a Rhodes defender and keeper to give SU the 3-1 lead.
Rhodes got back in the action when Nick Bailey found Michael Pappas who had just Pierce to beat and pulled the Lynx within one 3-2 with 27 minutes left to play.
Strong Pirate defense and a continued attack helped Southwestern close out the game and senior day win.
Southwestern improves to 9-9 overall and 5-5 in the SCAC conference to finish up their season.
