PIRATES DROP FINAL GAME OF ROAD TRIP TO DOMINICAN
SAN RAFAEL, Calif. - Southwestern's lacrosse team closed out their first road trip at Dominican University, losing 20-6 on Sunday afternoon. The Pirates led early but a tough second quarter led to the loss.
Edward Williams got things rolling for SU, scoring the first goal of the game with 5:50 to go in the first quarter, assisted by Grady Sampley. Dominican tied it up 30 seconds later but the Pirates responded with another goal when Jamie Long found Connor Hanrahan for SU's second goal of the game. After one quarter Southwestern led 2-1.
Teams traded goals at the outset of the second quarter and with 8 minutes remaining in the period the score was locked 5-5. Dominican took the lead in and then scored four unanswered goals to take a 9-5 lead going into halftime.
It was more of the same in the second half as Dominican continued to extend their lead while Southwestern had trouble finding the back of the net. DU posted five more goals in the fifth, pushing their lead to 14-5. After a tough fourth quarter Dominican sealed a 20-6 win.
Thomas Mock led with three goals in the contest while Connor Hanrahan and Williams added one each. Luther Faulk, Long and Sampley all had one assist.
Southwestern was outshot in the game 33-18 but were even in ground balls at 42 each. The real difference maker was in turnovers as SU had 15 turnovers to Dominican's 8.
The Pirates remain on the road for a pair of games in St. Louis, MO. The face Carthage on Friday night at 7pm and then Fontbonne on Sunday at noon.
