PIRATES TAKE SECOND AT OPENING SPRING TOURNAMENT
BELTON, Texas - The Southwestern men's golf team opened their spring season in style with a second place finish at the UMHB Invitational. All of the Pirates finished in the top 16 out of 39 golfers.
Despite the frigid temps Southwestern started our strong with Mikey Vaughan leading the way ending round one in fifth place with 77 strokes and teammates Ricky Jones and James Charles hot on his heels in a four way tie for sixth at 78 strokes. Sean Madera came in a tie for tenth with 79 strokes and Cody Patrick was in 18th with 84 strokes.
Anticipating the wintery weather headed towards Central Texas on Tuesday, tournament hosts decided to move up round 2 play to Monday afternoon, challenging all players in their first contest after the winter. SU responded well and hung on to second place by 12 strokes.
Patrick improved by six strokes over his opening round, shooting a 78 to end in a tie for 12th. Vaughan ended in a tie for seventh after shooting a second round 80 and Charles shot an 81 for 11th place. Madera's second round 84 put him in a tie for 14th while Jones' 86 placed him at 16th.
The PIrates continue the season at the Concan Invitational on March 15th and 16th.
