PIRATES IMPROVE ONE SPOT TO END IN FIFTH PLACE AT UMHB INVITE
SALADO, Texas – The Southwestern men’s golf team had
a solid team performance to come in fifth place overall at the UMHB
Invitational, just 11 strokes behind first place Tyler Junior
College. All Pirates finished within 13 strokes of each other over
the two rounds, proving that SU has a deep team for the 2009-10
season.
Senior Ricky Jones set the tone for the Pirates and finished tied
for sixth place. After shooting a three-over-par 75 on the first
day Jones turned it up a notch to shoot a two-under-par 70, the
lowest round of any golfer on the day.
Sophomores Cody Patrick and Sean Madera swapped first-round scores
to end in a tie for 26th with 151 strokes. Patrick shot a
first-round 77 and followed with a 74 while Madera shot a 74 for
his opening round and followed with a 77.
First-year James Charles and sophomore Cameron Fanning were close
behind in a tie for 31st place with 152 strokes. Charles shot a 77
for the first round and 75 on the second while Fanning had a 75
first round and 77 second round.
Also competing for Southwestern were first-year Mikey Vaughan and
sophomore Zach Sewill. Vaughan closed the day in a tie for 51st
with 157 strokes (80-77) while Sewill ended tied for 59th place
with 158 strokes (78-80).
The Pirates will look to continue their 6th place and better
finishes at the Alamo City Classic at Spring Branch, TX on October
12-13.
