YOUNG PIRATE GOLF TEAM BEGINS FALL SEASON

The Southwestern men’s golf team begins their fall season on Thursday with the deepest team Coach Ruyle has ever had. Coach Ruyle returns three of the top five golfers from last year, senior Ricky Jones and sophomores Sean Madera and Cody Patrick.

Jones, the lone senior on the 2009-2010 squad, provides solid experience to this young team. In ten tournaments last year Jones shot an average score of 80.52 in 23 rounds. At the SCAC Conference Championship he finished tied for 16th in the conference out of 45 and fourth in the region with a 22 over par.

Madera will look to build of his strong freshman performance. He played in all 10 tournaments last season with an average score of 78.22 in 23 rounds. Madera hit his stride as the season went on and finished tied for 12th in the conference at the SCAC Championships and just ahead of Jones regionally to take third with a 21 over par.

Fellow sophomore, Patrick, joins Madera and will bring added consistency to the Pirate line-up. In seven tournaments last year he had an average score of 81.94 in 18 rounds. Patrick showed just how much of an impact he can make at the John Bohmann Memorial Invitational where he finished tied for 14th out of 79 golfers with a 12 over par for three rounds.

“I’m looking for all these guys to be improved from last year,” says Coach Ruyle. “We will be a young team with one senior and the rest underclassmen. In addition to Madera and Patrick, sophomores Zach Sewill and Cameron Fanning should give us some depth to the team.”

The Pirates add four first-years to the team, James Charles, Matthew Hall, Mikey Vaughan and Alejandro Villamil. “I look for first years, Mikey Vaughan and James Charles to make an immediate impact as well,” states Coach Ruyle. “This is probably the deepest team I have had in my 10 years at Southwestern and I am looking forward to a good season.”

Coach Ruyle feels that the Pirates “have a good schedule set up this year.” On September 14-15 Southwestern opens the fall season at the John Bohmann Memorial Invitational in Seguin, Texas. Their first home match is on September 26th against the University of Dallas.
