HISTORY
Southwestern University began playing baseball in 1884 when the
Pirates posted a 1-0 record after a 52-12 win over The University
of Texas. Up until the 1971 season, SU fielded baseball teams and
even placed several players in professional baseball. However, the
direction of the baseball program at Southwestern changed after
1970 when a five-year minor league baseball veteran named Jim
Mallon became Head Coach.
From that 1971 season until his retirement in 2004, the Bucs
posted a record of 1,197 wins against 601 losses. Among the other
accomplishments the program achieved during this time were:
becoming the third-winningest NAIA team; putting together 10
consecutive 40+ win seasons; and, placing 21 players in pro
baseball. The 1983 and 1984 squads competed in the NAIA World
Series, the Bucs' highest finish to date.
Mallon also oversaw the transition of the baseball program from
being affiliated with the NAIA into an NCAA Division III team. As a
DIII school and member of the Southern Collegiate Athletic
Conference since 1995, SU has won its conference five times and
been runners-up on four occasions. The Pirates have competed in
seven NCAA Tournaments and have hosted the NCAA West Regional three
times.
Current Head Coach Jim Shelton came on board in 1996 as the
Assistant Coach and took the helm of the program after Mallon's
retirement in 2004. Shelton was also the Assistant Coach from
1991-1992.
