SU BASEBALL FALLS AT UMHB IN HOMERUN LADEN GAME

The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team exploded for a 12-run first inning and the Cru never looked back on the way to a 26-7 victory over Southwestern University Tuesday afternoon in Belton. UMHB improves to 8-6 overall with the victory. The loss drops the Pirates to 8-10 on the year.

UMHB broke the game open with 12 runs in the bottom of the first inning. Joseph Villegas opened the scoring with an RBI single. Andrew White then scored on a throwing error and Josh Fredrick followed with a three-run home run. Kyle Flynn's RBI single made it 6-0 and White added a bases-loaded walk to make it 7-0. After another run scored a wild pitch, Villegas singled home two more runs and R.B. Garza blasted a two-run homer to close out the scoring. Southwestern added a pair of runs in the top of the second when Mark Noggle and Nate Shipp hit back-to-back solo home runs. The Cru answered with six runs in the bottom of the third. Villegas ripped a grand slam to open the scoring, another run scored on an error and Flynn doubled home the final run. Villegas tripled home another run in the bottom of the fourth and scored on Garza's double to make it 20-2. Noggle's two-run homer highlighted a three-run sixth for the Pirates to cut it to 20-5. UMHB added four more in the bottom of the seventh. The first run scored on a wild pitch and Michael Garza added a three-run home run. The Cru closed out the scoring with two more in the eighth on Daylon Blain's RBI groundout and Michael Garza's RBI single.

Hunter Hawkins earned the win for UMHB to even his record at 1-1. Matt Stuart took the loss for Southwestern to fall to 0-2 on the year. Offensively, Mark Noggle led the Pirates going 2-4 including 2 homeruns, 2 runs and 3 RBI's. Matthew Clark and Matt Gruetzner had two hits apiece for the Pirates.

Southwestern University returns to conference action on Saturday as they take on rival Trinity. First pitch is set for 2:00 pm and they will play one, nine inning game.
