Head Coach Lester Sombito
Sombito is in his eighth season as head coach of the Pirates men's
and women's tennis programs at Southwestern University. In his
first season as head coach, he guided both the men's and women's
team to fifth place finishes in the 2005 SCAC Championships. In
2012, Sombito lead the women's team to their highest finish, fourth
place.
Sombito has coached 12 All-SCAC Tournament selections, 5 All-SCAC Tennis Team pick and 14 All-SCAC Honorable Mention picks.
Sombito, a native of Houston, attended the University of Mary-Hardin Baylor in Belton, TX where he was a First Team All-Heart of Texas Conference selection in his senior year, was a two-time captain and selected as the MVP by his team as a senior. Sombito served as a recruiter and admissions counselor at his alma-mater, as well as the assistant men's and women's tennis coach at UMHB from 2000-2003.
During his stint at UMHB he also was a tennis instructor for the Belton Independent School District. He was the director of the UMHB Crusader Tennis Camp (2000-2002) and has been an instructor at many national tennis camps around the country. Prior to Southwestern he was the head coach of the men's and women's tennis programs at Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa a NAIA school and member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference.
Sombito graduated from UMHB in 1996 and received a master's degree in kinesiology and sports management from the University of Texas in 2002. Sombito is recently married and he and his wife, Katie, reside in Georgetown, TX.
