Oct. 16, 2008
The SU men's and women's teams won their opening meet of the season in dominating fashion, topping McMurry by a comfortable margin.
On the men's side, first-year Evan Firth grabbed three individual wins in the 200-yard IM (2:02.30), 100-yard fly (56.28) and 500-yard free (5:04.11) to pace Southwestern's attack. Overall, the Pirate men won all but 2 events and also picked up 5 second-place finishes and 4 third-place finishes.
Individually for the men, Sophomore Taylor Steele, first-year Travis Macha and Sophomore Dustin McCammon each won a pair of titles. Steele won the 200-yard free (1:56.84) and helped the 400-yard free relay of Macha, first-year Alex Carmona, Steele and McCammon to a win in 3:25.07. On top of the relay win, Macha claimed the 50-yard free (22.29), while McCammon topped the 100-yard back (58.88). In addition, Firth set a school record in the 200 IM and Macha came within hundreths of two additional school records in the 50 free and 100 free.
"This year looks to be very bright for the men. They are capable of winning more dual meets, breaking multiple school records and setting history at the conference meet in February," said assistant coach Nicole Kaupp.
The SU women took on a much-improved McMurry team and came away with the victory, showing the depth that makes their team strong. SU was out-touched by .01 in the opening 200 medley relay, but came back in the 400 free relay to win by several seconds. Overall, the women won six events, including a 1-2 finish in the 200 free and a 1-2-3 finish in the 100 free. In addition to the event wins, the women also picked up 5 second-place finishes and 8 third-place finishes.
Southwestern's double-winners for the women included sophomore Bailey Thompson, senior Jessie Carrier, senior Alana Bergfield and sophomore Michelle Comerota. Thompson won the 200-yard free (2:06.06) and anchored the 400-yard free relay of Carrier, first-year Sarah Ayers, Comerota and Thompson to a win in 3:54.38. On top of the relay win, Carrier also claimed the 50-yard free title in 25.57, while Bergfield won the 200-yard IM (2:18.20) and 100-yard breast (1:11.67). Comerota also touched first in the 100-yard free (58.13).
The teams compete next on October 25 against Division II Incarnate Word.
